Today, TuSimple announced that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has closed its investigation into an incident from April 6, 2022 where a TuSimple truck made contact with a concrete median divider while our autonomous system was being engaged. Over the past several months, we’ve engaged closely with FMCSA in answering questions, listening to feedback, and we’re pleased that the investigation concluded without any penalties brought against the Company.

At TuSimple, safety is at the core of our mission. We know that autonomous technology will transform the trucking industry, and we recognize the technology can only be brought to market in a safe and methodical way. Self-driving is a highly complex development process that involves sophisticated software, next generation hardware, and the highest level of safety across the entire system and operations. That’s why we are committed to continuously learning and improving our technology.

Following the external and internal investigations, we identified three main opportunities for improvement: operational process, system architecture, and verification and validation methodologies. We are confident that the improvements we have made will help us achieve our mission of enabling the safest, lowest cost, and most reliable autonomous freight capacity.

To give you a better idea of our response to the incident and our continued commitment to safety, I would like to invite you to sit down with our Vice President of Systems and Safety Engineering, Adrian Thompson. In this video, Adrian discusses our response to the incident, our learnings, and our continued commitment to a culture of safety.

We remain confident in our technology leadership and are committed to providing the safest autonomous driving experience possible. We will continue to work collaboratively with various regulators to promote the safe development of autonomous driving technology. I want to thank our team for working diligently each day in improving our technology and operational process, and to our external stakeholders for their support throughout the process.
